Owner
Josiah Berg
Josiah started building with his father, Richard, from a very early age. Over his 30 years of construction, he's held nearly every position from entry to VP. Now, he and his family are excited to give residents and businesses of northwest Ohio quality construction built on integrity and built to last. He owns and operates Berg Design + Build with his wife, Destiny. They have three children who all lend a helping hand when they're out of school and sports.
What do you love about working at Berg Design + Build?
What I love most about Berg Design + Build is having the opportunity to serve the community I grew up in while building something that can last for generations. I hope one day I can pass the business down to my kids and see them continue what we started. I also take a lot of pride in being able to provide good jobs for others and create opportunities that help our employees support and better the lives of their families.
How did you get into the construction and general contracting industries?
When I was younger, around 8 years old, I’d go with my dad to jobs. Around that age I remember building a pool shed with him. It was 12-12 pitch. The owners were scared because it seemed dangerous—but I wasn’t scared. As time went on, I’d help him as much as I could.
By the time I was 12, I worked every summer for him; 6:30am-8:00pm on weekdays and 6:30am-5:00pm on Saturdays. While in school I’d still be with him 20-25 hours per week. My dad’s an all-work-and-no-play kind of guy. He knows a lot. He always wanted to do things right—no cutting corners. And he’s is very good with ideas. Anything that looks nice and takes time to do are the things worth doing. And the things that take a lot of thought are the ones that last.
He slowed down a little after I turned 18; so I went to work with someone else. I learned a lot from people in framing. Then moved on to a local construction company. Within 3 years, I was promoted to foreman for excavating and a few other operations.
When I transitioned to framing, which, was more all-around, I could do a lot more. Then, a few years later I was in the VP suite. Now, as owner of our own company, I’m doing many of the same things I was doing before.
What does integrity mean to you?
It means a lot to me. I’m always honest with people up front. Being respectful of their time and expectations. It's about candor, clarity, and communication. So, doing things the right way shows in the final product. That truth always prevails in the end. We are the same with everyone.
What does longevity mean to you?
Tools and equipment need to last. Things that are quality are more pricey, but they last. There’s a certain level I won’t go below when it comes to material. “Berg built that. It’s all falling apart” is a phrase that absolutely will not happen. Quality—doing things the right way—sometimes it takes longer and a harder time to do, but it’s to build something that lasts. Our name is important.
What do you want customers to know about Berg Design + Build?
Quality. Process. Final product is everything. Our name is attached to everything we do, so we take our job—building your vision—seriously. King Solomon said it well in Proverbs 22:1, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” Having a good character and a trustworthy reputation is worth much more than money. Material things like silver and gold can fade or be lost. But a good name outlives a person and earns genuine respect and trust, built through honest choices, kindness, and treating others well.
What makes the residents of Northwest Ohio wonderful to work with?
It’s the country living with a lot of good people—people we trust. This is where I grew up; so, it’s the people I’ve grown relationships with over the years. A lot of people I have a lot in common with. We care about our community and our kids.
